Since 1977, guests of Snowshoe Country have been
enjoying the serenity of this rustic camp overlooking picturesque Sand Lake.
Located 25 miles southeast of Ely, Minnesota - about 15 miles south of the Boundary
Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), the camp is the ideal retreat for those yearning to escape to a more natural landscape.
It's an easy and affordable trip from the Twin Cities, Duluth/Superior, or
adjacent states.
Wolverine Cabin - named from the movie, "Running Free,"
(1993)
partially filmed here.
Many guests of Snowshoe Country enjoy exploring trails
in the camp vicinity, or snowshoeing and skiing the State trails in the Sand Lake Peatlands Scientific and Natural Area on the west side of Sand Lake. Atop a gravel and rock glacial esker crowned with cedars, pines, birches and balsam firs, in an area with an elevation of nearly 2,000 feet, we
often experience the earliest, latest, and heaviest snowfalls in the region.

Co-editorWinter is over and the hiking is great.
The lake has finally lost its ice cover and a few brave souls are checking it

The local five-pack of timber wolves are hanging around the camp and
Sand Lake area, serenading everyone with their nightly songfests.
For those who were visiting Snowshoe Country in mid-February and saw the
Cessna 185
spotter airplane and the helicopter hovering, personnel from MDNR & other
agencies were locating & radio-collaring 34 additional moose in the Isabella
area for research that
week - as explained by articles in both the Duluth News Tribune and the
Minneapolis StarTribune
on Feb. 24th.
