Explore our many trails by snowshoe or cross-country skis. Any winter day on Sand Lake is a great opportunity to pack a lunch and venture out into Snowshoe Country's natural surroundings. An orientation on snowshoes, bindings, Isabella or Ely area trails, sauna lore & protocol, or anything else can be held for you at any time during your visit. Just ask.

Trail or Alaskan Snowshoes
These are from WWII, meant to carry a 160 lb. person with 80 lb. pack. Also used in Korea.

Bearpaw Snowshoe
This snowshoe has a slight upturn and is useful for walking short distances or packing down a winter campsite.

Ojibwe or Cree Snowshoe
Small version for children.

Michigan, Maine or Trapper's Snowshoe
All-around snowshoe for deep powder and general use.

Cree or Ojibwe pattern
These are particularly functional when traversing alder brush or late winter's crusted snow. The pointed bow breaks crust.

Variously termed Michigan, Maine or Trapper Snowshoe
General purpose shoe. Larger versions can be a bit clumsy, but good for very deep snow.

In-between style developed in New England.

Green Mountain Modified Bearpaw
Classic bearpaw narrowed but with a substantial bow upturn. Very useful when traversing hilly terrain, or for general use. Most recent metal and plastic snowshoes are modeled after this style.
